I remember getting ready to walk out the door and roam
around the neighborhood with my friends. My dad would say, "plant your
carrots." What? "Plant your carrots?"
All dads know that puzzled look that your kid gives that
says, "huh" and "dork" all at the same time. That's the one
I gave. My dad
went on to tell me a short story. It is a story about St. Francis, who I have
always loved.
The story goes something like this. One day Francis was
working in the garden when a young brother came to him and asked, "Francis
if you knew you were going to die before the end of the day, what would you
do?" Francis quickly responded, " I would work in the garden."
From this story my dad coined the phrase,
"plant your carrots." I am not sure why he chose carrots, but with
that simple phrase I knew what he was trying to tell me. Everyday is a gift
that you can't take for granted, be prepared. If you are doing God's will, no
matter how big or small, then everything will be ok. Have fun and be
good. Everyday is an adventure with God. My life with all the crazy, funny and often unbelievable stories from my beautiful family. Giving everything I have for Lauren, Emma, Kolbe, and Joshua is me planting my carrots.
